You can help pollinators, just by adding milkweed and other native wildflowers to your garden. Milkweed is the only plant that Monarch butterflies can lay their eggs on, and the loss of milkweed throughout North America has resulted in a decline in Monarch butterfly numbers. All of us can make a difference by planting milkweed and other native flowering plants in our gardens.
Native plants also are well adapted to live in our climate and soils, so they are a great choice for your outdoor home landscape. These flowering perennial plants come in 4” recyclable pots. These plants are grown by the High Plains Environmental Center without pesticides.
Milkweed Pack includes 3 of each:
- Butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) – This perennial native grows to 12 to 18 inches tall and has bright orange flowers in the summer. This plant provides food for Monarch butterfly caterpillars, but many pollinators visit it for nectar. It looks great next to yellow or purple flowers, or planted with bronze fennel.
- Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) – Swamp milkweed is another well-behaved native milkweed which grows between 18 and 24 inches tall and has pink or white blooms in the summer. This plant provides food for monarch butterfly caterpillars, but many pollinators visit it for nectar. It looks especially nice with purple flowers or with native grasses.
To plant these flowers, the customer will choose a sunny, open spot in his/her garden or in a pot, then dig a hole as deep as the root ball is tall, and a little wider. The customer will gently remove the plant from its pot, place in the hole, cover with soil, then water until soil is moist. Plants will need regular water (1-3 x per week) until established.
Recommended for ages 5 and up, with adult supervision.
Each pack also comes with the digital download 10 Steps to a Pollinator Garden.
